Jackie Hamwey, PLY
Snowboarding/Paralympian
I grew up in Boston, MA and went to Northeastern University where I majored in Biology and Minored in Sociology. I worked after college in Biotech for 8 years at a start up company called Quanterix. I was a senior researcher at Quanterix and absolutely loved it. When my life took a turn and I lost my leg from a boat propellor back in 2016 off of Chatham, MA my path changed course. After years of surgeries and recovery I was finally in a place where I could pick up life where it left off. Except, my life goals were different than before. After watching the 2018 Paralympic games, specifically snowboarding, I had a compelling desire to pursue snowboarding on a competitive level. I have always loved sports and grew up playing hockey, lacrosse, volleyball and softball. However, I always had a passion for snowboarding and felt the most alive when on a board. I finally felt compelled to seek one of the US team coaches in 2023 to witness the para snowboard experience and asked if I could train with him. After that amazing week of training at Mt, Hood in Oregon, I knew that I wanted to keep pursuing the sport. He put me in touch with Team Utah and I joined their team where I learned the ins and outs of para snowboarding and competed the past three years. I uprooted my life to move to Utah permanently for training. This past year, I achieved World Cup level with hopes of getting selected for the Paralympic team. Those dreams came true and I represented Team USA in Milano Cortina this past March. This bio only scratches the surface to my story and who I am as a person. I made something positive out of something so tragic that happened to me. I completely changed my life in so many ways and didn’t shy away from a new opportunity that presented itself to me. It’s a sign of my grit and never giving up on myself. Come find me at the event if you want to get to know me more!
